Piano Packing

How to Pack a Piano for Moving

Transportation of large-sized musical instruments is not an easy task, even for people with transportation experience. Especially difficult are considered the transportation of pianos - this musical instrument is extremely heavy, bulky and its surface is very sensitive to damage.

An important step in transporting this type of musical instrument is packaging. Let's talk about how to properly protect pianos when they are shipped unassembled or in pieces.

How to Pack a Piano for Moving

Packing an unassembled piano

Transporting a musical instrument in its unassembled state is a very difficult task. As a whole, a piano is very heavy, bulky, and at the same time can not be loaded into a car. But often it is not possible to disassemble a musical instrument into separate parts for further transport.
If you decide to transport the piano unassembled, it is important to protect all of its elements from accidental impact. First of all, you should remove everything that can be dismantled without the use of special tools, i.e. wheels and decorations. These elements are best transported either wrapped in bubble wrap or inside separate boxes.
Once all the additional elements have been removed, it is important to protect all protruding parts, such as the keys and legs. This way, you can carry the piano out and then bring it in safely. Protect the protruding parts by wrapping them with foam rubber or a thick, soft cloth.
You can protect the cabinet by wrapping it in bubble wrap and then tightly wrapping it in stretch wrap. But if you are transporting the piano together with other furniture, it makes sense to create an additional layer of thick cardboard - it is good to protect the fragile coating from accidental shocks.
Note that the different elements of the musical instrument should be wrapped separately: this way you protect the covering more evenly, fix all the protective elements more tightly and can transport your shipment more easily.

Packing a disassembled piano

Transporting a disassembled piano is much easier, safer, and more comfortable. In addition, a completely disassembled musical instrument in some cases can even be transported with a passenger car. But it is worth noting that a complete disassembly is very difficult - both tools and certain skills are required.
In its disassembled state, the piano takes very little space, and you can take it out and bring it in without much difficulty. At the same time during disassembly it is important to take into account the type and model of musical instrument: the construction of the "Soviet piano" is quite different from the modern one. The main thing is not to lose any elements and correctly reassemble everything in its new place. To do this, when dismantling and packing you should follow a certain algorithm of actions:
Remove all additional elements to which you have access without removing the panels: decorative elements, wheels and so on. It is better to transport them in a box with a soft filler. If not, you can wrap any excess with cloth or foam;
Remove the top and front panels. It is important to wrap them with bubble wrap and then secure them with stretch wrap. It will not be superfluous to make another additional layer of soft cloth;
Dismantle the shock mechanism. It needs to be packed particularly carefully: it is better to use foam rubber or thick soft cloth, in an extreme case - cardboard. If possible, transport the impact mechanism separately from the other parts to avoid accidental impact;
Separate the side panels. They, as well as the front and top panels, should be wrapped with bubble wrap protective stretch wrap. Since they are quite massive, it makes sense to provide additional protection from damage by winding something around the panels beforehand;
The main frame does not need to be packed, because it is completely wooden and resistant to damage. For ease of transportation, you can wrap it in film.
